Linkin Park, Kevin Rose, and Timothy Ferris on Choosing Domain Names

I just finished watching a great video from one of my favorite blogs that is not necessarily related to domaining, SEO, or Internet marketing: The Four Hour Workweek.

The video is an informal conversation between Timothy Ferris (the author of Four Hour Workweek – highly recommended) and Kevin Rose (founder of Digg.com) and has a lot of really good stuff related to naming companies, choosing domain names, and angel investing.

One of the nuggets from the video is when Timothy Ferris mentions that the driving reason between Linkin Park choosing the irregular spelling for their name (“Linkin” instead of “Lincoln”) is that the domain name LinkinPark.com was available to register while they were unable to acquire the domain name LincolnPark.com.

It is great to see that the band had the savvy to factor in domain name availability and the importance of having a .com domain when they were choosing their band name.

Interesting. They were unable to acquire LincolnPark.com? It’s not the best of names, and I’m assuming they weren’t big yet when they went for it (preventing anyone looking to capitalize). Sounds like they didn’t make much of an effort to get it.

Checking out Archive.org, it was probably held by a domainer. But still, it’s not the best of names. I can’t see a domainer asking for an outrageous price for it.

Makes me want to know more details!

I agree that it would be interesting to hear some more of the Linkin Park backstory.

I also thought it was interesting that in the video Kevin Rose initially tried to acquire dig.com but was unsuccessful.

Goes to show that there is definitely some value in finding strong, short, brandable .com names in addition to the standard keyword domain names that domainers usually love (myself included).

I’m a big music fan of Linkin Park and I remember reading that years ago, long before I got into domaining. It’s funny how this is one of the details you hold on to only for it to have relevance later on.
