What is the Best Domain Name Investment You Have Ever Made?

What is the absolute best domain investment that you have ever made?

Come on, I know that all of us get the urge to brag about some of the great deals that we have gotten or how we were smart enough to spot a money making trend years in advance or how we were able to grab a great domain and immediately flip it for a great profit or monetize it to bring in boatloads of cash and we just can’t wait to have someone ask this question so out with it.

The contest is on! What is the best domain name investment you have ever made? :)

PS To many who are in the same boat as me when it comes to NDA’s then just give your second (or third or fourth) best domain name investment and let’s all chant together “I will not break my NDA. I will not break my NDA. I – ” OK, you get the point :)

  3. Its a great feeling when the phone rings and someone offers you money for your domain… you know the buyers are serious when their business name is my domain…big bucks! s**t site by the way.

  4. I made some huge money off a removal firm who put full page adverts in all cities of New Zealand in the YELLOW PAGES.. and I still own the site… he also forgot to renew his FULL PAGE AVERTS the next year round… he did try to buy it back but I said Lease it!

A domain I regged for free in July 1995 and sold for 2.9 million in 2003.

  8. Oklahoma says:

I meant to say, for those that don’t know, domains were free to register, up until about Sept. 1995.

  9. John says:

@ federer – wow, some awesome flips dude, wish I could even get half the flips you made :)

Best one for me – bought HVZ.com for $1,200 and sold it for $3,700….

SupremeCourt.com , I’ve had it for years! Lots of natural traffic, now I’ve developed it and I’m very proud of what the ultimate rewards will bring. Need a Lawyer or Attorney?

  11. Eric Borgos says:

I bought Bored.com for $35 from Network Solutions in 2007 after it became available because the previous owner did not pay their bill and I sold it in 2008 for $4 million. It was a developed site when I sold it, not just a domain, but even so the domain alone would have been worth $2 million+.

  12. Eric Borgos says:

    Sorry, I meant I bought Bored.com in 1997, not 2007.

  13. Howie says:

For us owning the generics singular and plural for our industry have been the single greatest investment in my life. While most in my industry still do not get it.We know what traffic and leads the website/Domains generate has turned into tens of millions of dollars in sales of used tires for our company it also has generated millions of unique vistors over the 12 years we are running it. We remember worrying the internet may destroy our wholesale /export used tire business just the opposite it allowed us steady growth with a tremendous advantage over all of our competitors. We have had many offers over the years to sell the Domains including some very sewrious six digit offers .Our domains are our single most valuable business asset.

  14. Shannon says:

    Preparedness.com sold for $5000
SafeBuilder.com sold for $2500 and the buyer let it expire, so I own it again.

  15. Dtagr says:

GraffitiRemoval.pro – I was outbid for the dotcom about 18 months ago. For my industry I think this one is better.

    Or Dtagrs.com – I like them both.

I don’t intend to sell either of these names but will put other domaining profits into relaunching Dtagrs.

  16. Mark Fulton says:

    Great question.

I would have to say my own personal name (MarkFulton.com – $70 at Register.com in 1998) I don’t know what I would do without it. It has really shaped who I am over the many years.

  17. Alex says:

I’ve registered a few domains and flipped them
for 1.5K – $5K – but if you ever ask the question,
“What’s the WORST Domain Mistake You’ve Made”? I’ll
let you know I’d reserved a domain back in ‘97 (you could reserve
domains without buying them back then from NetSol) but let it go becasue I didn’t want to spend the $75 registration fee.

    The domain? SearchEngines.com.
